Safe Water for Healthy Nepal

Summary

A devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake on 25 April 2015 and 7.3 magnitude on 12 May claimed life of around 9,000 people in Nepal and directly affected above 8 million people. Due to the destruction of houses, people were forced to refuge in open space and many lost their belongings. Around 24,000 classrooms and other school facilities have been damaged. With the limited water supply and the probability of using contaminated water, there is a high risk and increase of health and hygiene issues.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Due to loss of houses and buildings, people are obliged to refuge in communal shelters. The lack of accessibility and various other conditions and situations, the basic needs of survival like use of safe and treated water cannot be ensured. Hence, at this situation there is a high probability of spreading of water borne diseases in the community due to lack of safe and treated water. Due to damage of water sanitation facilities in their school, children are facing difficulty.

How will this project solve this problem?

Orientation and awareness programs on safe drinking water targeting the communities that lack knowledge and access to technologies. Promotion of different technologies for safe drinking water. Reconstruct water and sanitation facilities in the school

Potential Long Term Impact

Responding towards the immediate need of availability and use of safe and treated water, we will continue our work towards promoting safe drinking water campaign in Nepal. The project will help reduce the possible spread of water borne diseases in the affected area as well as change in behavior towards using safe and treated water in their day to day life.
