About NIS2
NIS2 officially known as the Directive (EU) 2022/2555 is the second iteration of Directive (EU) 2016/1148 on Security of Network and Information Systems (NIS).
NIS2 aims to improve the overall cybersecurity posture of the EU by expanding the scope of covered entities, setting higher security and incident reporting standards, and fostering better cooperation and information sharing among member states. It seeks to ensure
that essential and important entities in critical sectors are adequately protected against cyber threats and vulnerabilities.
Affected Entities
NIS 2 focuses on two specific groups, Essential Entries, which are usually referred to as critical infrastructures, and Important Entities, where these are vital services and a potential disruption of them has a significant impact.
- Essential Services: Services such as Energy, Transport, Finance, Public Administration, Health, Space, Water supply, and Digital Infrastructure may vary by sector but generally consist of 250 employees, an annual turnover of € 50 million, or a balance sheet of € 43 million.
- Important Entities: Enities such as Postal Services, Waste Management, Chemicals, Research, Foods, Digital Providers, and Manufacturing may vary by sector but generally consist of 50 employees, an annual turnover of € 10 million, or a balance sheet of € 10 million.
